If you’ve never owned a boat before, you may not be aware that—just like cars—these vehicles are subject to a wide variety of different safety regulations and laws. While these ordinances may vary from state to state, there are a few general rules that are applicable across the entire U.S. that you’ll want to be aware of. To learn more about boating safety, and the gear you’ll need on board to stay up to code, check out our article below.

Flotation Devices

When out on the water with your boat, you are expected to have a minimum of at least two different personal flotation devices (PFDs) on board at all times, as well as a throwable PFD if your boat is over 16 feet in length. However, if you have more than two passengers aboard your vessel at one time, each individual will need to have their own PFD to use at any given notice.

When purchasing PFDs for yourself and your passengers, it’s important to remember that there are many different categories of flotation devices, with some being created specifically for cold water rescue, while others appear more similar to clothing than the life vests you may be more familiar with. To ensure you choose the right PFDs for you and your passengers, be sure to research your options before you start shopping.

Emergency Tools

While the above rules regarding PFDs and boats will ring true across the entire United States, other safety regulations may vary from state to state. To ensure you’re following your state’s local ordinances and guidelines, be sure to read up on your area’s boat safety laws before you hit the water. However, most states across the U.S. will require you to have a fire extinguisher on board, as well as a number of signaling devices to ensure you can reach out for help in case of an emergency. Typically, you’ll want to purchase at least two sound-making signaling devices, as well as one visible device that can be viewed at night when utilized.
